This has got to be the question I have asked myself for years. Do I grow my hair, go short, or does it suit my round face? While I did what most of us have done and that is google for answers, and this is what I found to get the best haircut for you.
Ultimately there is no straight forward answer, but in short, the key to getting the best hair cut is to work out your face shape and get a haircut that suits your shape. so is your face
-
Oval
-
Long
-
Round
-
Square
-
Heart
-
Diamond
Once you have this worked out, you will be able to match a style to go with. Below I go into more detail on Facial shapes and what suits you.
How to work out what facial shape you have?
So the first step is to determine what facial shape you have to see what style will suit, this is very easy to work out. Firstly Put your hair up and away from your face, once this is done get in front of a mirror. Using lipstick or a marker draw around your face on the mirror and then you will see your facial shape, one big tip don’t do what I did, and that is pick up the first lipstick I could and use it to realise it cost me £35.
So you have drawn around your face, so check the image below and see what facial shape is the closest. Now you have the shape lets get the best hairstyle to match Which are listed below:
Oval Face Shape
So an oval shape is when the length of your face is longer than the width, also your jawline is just a little narrower than your hairline. So you will notice you won’t have any prominent angles or points.
So you have an oval face? This is good news as this shape suits most styles. So its all down to your imagination what style you want to try as chances are it will suit you, from long or short styles are the best choices, although you will find mid-lengths hair cuts will work but might take the features of your face.
Here are my top picks:
-
Fancy going shorter try blunt bob that is just clear of your shoulders.
-
Shoulder length hair cut, having subtle layers this is to add volume and also keep your hair from becoming flat
-
Side swept bangs, this style looks incredible as it helps frame your face while achieving a balanced effect without cutting all your hair off
-
Slicked back also looks up does are fantastic and perfect for oval face shapes
Styles to avoid:
-
Your goal is to keep your face as clear as possible, so don’t go for the heavy bangs as the will make you face seem short and the same goes for the hairstyle of the same length as will make your face appear longer.
Long Face Shape
So long is similar to having an oval face but well just longer. So the length will be noticeably longer than the width.
So you have a long face, there are a few styles you will want to try and avoid short or too long haircuts, as this only emphasise your facial length. If you do want to keep your long hair add a fringe as this will immediately break up the length of your face. The main aim here is to try and make your face seem more full than it is to and to create a balance,
So here are the top hairstyles:
-
Go for curls as this will open up your face
-
Flat iron waves is an excellent way to get loose curls and those waves which will create the wider look to your face.
-
Salon style blowout is a straightforward, fast way to get more volume.
-
Just remember the ultimate goal for a long face is to increase the width, not the length.
Hairstyles that you will want to avoid:
-
So keeping in line with the wider not longer idea, try and avoid hairstyles that go too far past the Mid-length.
-
Also, keep well away from hairstyles of one length as this will also make your face look longer.
Round Face Shapes
To see if you have a round shaped face, which is basically when your face has no prominent corners or angles. Round faces commonly known as babyfaces, so congratulations it means you always look younger and can still adopt the new youthful hairstyles.
So you have around the face, you’ll want to consider going for something like a long bob with a centre parting to try and break up the roundness of your face shape. You do not want haircuts that hug your face as these will emphasise the roundness of your face. Ideas to consider, are long side swept bangs and an asymmetric cut.
Top hairstyles for around face:
-
The main goal here is to try and make your face appear more oval, straightforward method to do is always to leave a piece of your hair tucked up one side of your face. What this will do it will shorten the width of your face, which then tricks peoples eyes, making it look narrower.
-
Short hair is the best for round faces, especially when parted and styled the right way.
Hairstyles to avoid:
-
Avoid hiding your face behind lots of hair as this can stress the width of your face, you’ll want to go for something more medium length hair with long facial bangs.
-
One of a big no-no is soft, wispy bangs
Square Face Shapes
A squared face is generally wide and also the forehead cheeks and jawline is nearly the same width. The main feature of a square face is the jawline like Gwyneth Paltrow
So you have a square face, the aim here is to try and elongated face. Don’t get haircuts that expose your forehead. If you do decide to go for short hair, keep the fringe nice and wispy for a textured look.
Top hairstyles:
-
So have two options here you can either emphasise the squareness of your face and try to soften your jawline. If you want to stress the square shape, go for something like:
-
Blunt Bangs
-
Short bob
-
If you’d like to un-emphasise the squareness then soft and wispy bangs falling into the side to create Diagonal Lines, which will soften the lines on your face. Or you can just wear your hair straight and even longer, having layers that can start a couple of inches nearly before the end which draws peoples eyes Down this will add length to your face.
Hairstyles to avoid:
-
Try not to get thick bangs or blunts haircuts, as this will emphasise the angles on your face.
Heart Face Shapes
To work out if your heart-shaped face, it’s ultimately when your face is wider at your hairline and Temple, and at that point tapers too small narrower chin.
So you have a heart-shaped face, what is does it emphasises your eyes and cheekbones. A great way is to have bangs which hide those features and can be worn with most lengths of your choice. If you decide to go for short they should remain the same height as your chin or cheek this will broaden out the area of your face the perfect example is Reese Wetherspoon who also has a square face.

You have two options you can either try and bring focus towards your face shape or Focus on balancing it, by making the bottom half of your face look wider. So if you decide to bring attention to your heart-shaped face, go for putting up your hair and put it into a high top knot, or a slicked-back high ponytail. If you choose to try balancing it out, go for a hair length that is just over your shoulder, this will add volume around your jawline. If you decide you’d like to be her long why not try having a deep side part with loose waves that start Breaking by your collarbone this will end up drawing attention away from your forehead.
-
Ultimately shoulder length hair tends to look the best, this is because it adds volume around the bottom of your face, which makes your jawline seeing wider.
Diamond Face Shapes
To work out if you have a diamond shaped face, you will find your forehead and jawline end up being the same width apart, and your cheekbones are the widest, which makes your narrowest part your chin.
So you think you have a diamond shaped face, the goal is to try and minimalise your wide cheeks bones while attempting to decrease the length of your face. Want to decide on a hairstyle, your goal is to try and soften your facial features.
Recommended hairstyles:
-
Good news is with a diamond-shaped face you can pull off most hairstyles, there’s just a few that you will want to avoid. This is because your face narrows at the chin, so try and prevent things like rounded bangs, as this will end up shortening your face and ultimately making your face look smaller that really is. Also try to avoid straight across bangs as these Will draw a focus on the broadest part of your face and makes searching look narrow that it truly is.
